Java will have a strong influence on so called "network appliances" and consumer devices--everything from cell phones to household appliances, and in the area of electronic commerce. Java is leading in this area and, worldwide, is gaining a foothold very rapidly. JavaSoft is probably two years ahead of Microsoft in developing a platform and infrastructure for electronic commerce. This is one arena where Java's strengths will outshine other technologies, and not be eclipsed by Microsoft's strong market share.
