problem with displaying images

hii there
iam working in a java project involing images for first time.
the project is a topology discovery so as a new element is discovered it is to be plotted at run time
so iam unable to think in this direction
could you pls help me out
what i have collected thru mine very brief knowledge is tht i have to make a function of drawing an iamge n then later when new element is discovered the screen is to repainted so the previous plotted elements along with the new one are plotted.
pls guide me in this direction i am a student n it's a curriculumn project
